Paul Klee
(Münchenbuchsee 1879 – Locarno, Switzerland, 1940)
German-Swiss painter and printmaker, regarded as one of the most popular and prolific artists of the 21st century.
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, during the early part of his career, Klee focussed on etchings, such as the series, Inventions, depicting distorted figures.
His first enjoyed success after the retrospective exhibition organized by Hanz Gotz, the German dealer. Throughout his career, his diverse artworks have ranged from figuratives to abstracts, as did the themes of his works.
The Paul Klee Foundation at the Kunstmuseum, Berne holds his most important collection. His works are also held at most important collections, like the Guggenheim, New York, Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam and MOMA, New York.
