Gustav Klimt
(Baurngarten, 1862 - Vienna, 1918)
Austrian painter and designer, and widely acknowledged to be one of the most recognized names in Austrian cultural history.
Trained at the School of Applied Arts, Vienna, Klimt was influenced the Art Nouveau, Impressionism, Symbolism and other avant-garde themes of the era.
His most characteristic works, whether paintings or drawings, depict female beauty and figure, emphasizing their sensuality, with either very decorative clothes or similarly decorative backgrounds. Examples of such works, include, Judith (Osterreichische Gallery, Vienna) and his portrait of Emilie Eloge, his sister-in-law (Historisches Museum der Stadt, Vienna). His drawings were normally more sexual with depictions of nude or semi-naked women.
Artworks by Klimt were also very influential on other Viennese artists of his time, like Schiele and Kokoschka.
