Matisse, Henri

French painter, printmaker and sculptor, and quite likely, one of the most popular artists of the 20th century along with Pablo Picasso.

After attending several leading French art schools, like Academie Julian, the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Carriere, Matisse´s early paintings were in the Neo-Impressionist style, such as Luxe, calme et volupte (Musee dÓrsay, Paris). During the late first and second decade of the century, he was clearly influenced by Cubist style and created paintings like, Bathers by a River (Art Institute of Chicago). His paintings now included pleasant themes like – brilliant interiors, still-lifes of flowers and fruits. He was also an accomplished sculptor and his most famous works are probably The Back I-IV, a series of four bronzes.

During the latter part of his career, he also created some of his most popular and original works, gouaches decoupees, or paper cutouts, arranged in abstract patterns, for example the L´Escargot (Tate Gallery, London). Matisse, as an artist was known for devoting himself to the esthetic aspects of art. In his words: ‘What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or disturbing subject matter… lime a comforting influence, a mental balm-something like a good armchair in which one res6ts from physical fatigue.’

Henri Matisse was survived by his son, Pierre Matisse, one of the most well known art dealers of the 20th century.
