Jacob, Max

Max Jacob
Quimper, 1876- Drancy, 1944

French writer and painter, better known for his colourful personality and presence in the Parisian art scene of the early 20th century, than his actual artworks.

Trained at the Académie Julian, Jacob was a close friend of Picasso, Appolinare, Juan Gris and other important names of the Parisian art world. In 1921, after converting to Catholicism, the Jewish-born painter moved to the monastery of St. Benoit-sur-Loire and began painting pious religious scenes.

Max Jacob died of pneumonia at a concentration camp in Drancy, in 1944.
