Chilean-born painter, printmaker and draughtsman, best known for his SURREALIST work.
Initially trained in architecture at the Catholic University of Santiago (1929–31), he began working for Le Corbusier’s atelier in Paris, in 1933.
His stay in Europe led Matta to be closely associated and influenced by leading Spanish artists and writers of that time, such as: Federico García Lorca, the poet and playwright (1898–1936), Salvador Dalí, Alvar Aalto, the architect and others. He also collaborated with Walter Gropius , László Moholy-Nagy and Marcel Duchamp.
