Cindy Sherman
1956, New Jersey

American Photographer Cindy Sherman is arguably the best known living female photographer. She is best known for her Untitled Film Stills , a series of black-and white photographs from the late 1970’s in which the artist depicted herself dressed in the guises of clichéd B-movie heroines. While many may mistake her photographs for self-portraits, her works only play with elements of self-portraiture and are really something quite different. In each of these photographs, Sherman plays a type -- not an actual person, but a self-fabricated fictional one. Her work was the subject of solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, in 1982 and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, in 1987. The Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased the entire Untitled Film Stills .
