Antoni Tapies

(Barcelona, 1923)

Spanish painter and printmaker, and probably the best known artist in Spain, in the second half of the 20th century.

A self-taught artist, he became a member of the Barcelona-based avant-garde group, Dau al Set. While his initial works were influenced by Surrealism, he turned to abstract art in the early 1950s and Pop art in the 1970s. His paintings have continued to incorporate materials, such as, parts of furniture, dust, clay and other common place items. His works can be found at most major collections, around the world.
