Detailed Description

The first table set (Tête à tête set) started off with a wish to design furniture that would not look over-designed. The construction is based on trial and error, akin to the furniture of the kind you can find in open-air museums or folk-art museums - an inspiration for this project. Design was not an issue in those days. In the end, three table sets and a coffee table resulted all of which seem very ordinary at first glimpse. The planks of the table tops and seats have a structure reminscent of wood, with visible ‘woodgrains’, a result of the production process. A closer look reveals it is made out of modern material from the late 20th-century: recycled plastic used along Dutch canals. Wind-, water-, salt-, acid-, UV-resistant, this material has practical aspects which make these tables so suitable for house, garden and kitchen. When the Tête à Tête set and Beer table set were produced, requests came in for bigger tables and benches with backs. The Deluxe set was developed as an answer to this. Ordinary tables were nominated for the Rotterdam Design Prize in 1999.
