Zao Wou-Ki Biography

Beijing, China, 1921 -

A master Chinese-French artist, Zao Wou-Ki works in an abstract style. He often works with large canvases in triptychs and diptychs, where swaths of color seem to writhe and smash together on the canvas.

He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Hanzhou, and later studied in Paris. His first exhibition there met with praise from Miro and Picasso.

He is a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts, and is considered one of the most successful contemporary Chinese painters alive today.
