Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen was born in 1902 in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he later worked as an architect and designer.

He first received international recognition with his modernist design for terraced houses in Klampenborg. Soon after he created the Ant chair, which was one of the first chairs suitable for mass production. Economical because of its simplicity and minimal use of materials, it only consisted of two main components, the legs and seat. Over five million Ant chairs have been sold since production began in the early 1950s. Later in the 1950s Jacobsen took on the task of designing everything for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. He designed the building itself and the furniture, including his curved armchairs: Egg, Swan, Drop and Pot, all with a free and playful manner. He continued working and designing until his death in 1971.
