Harry Bertoia

Harry Bertoia was born in 1915 in San Lorenzo, Italy. He immigrated to the United States and studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.

He is known for his unique style of using metal-wire basketwork to create chairs.  Some are chrome plated, others just painted and others coated in colored vinyl. His work is divided between objects perfect for everyday use and imaginative art and jewellery. In the 1940´s he used his unique style to create a line of coffee and tea service.
He also produced a variety of organic designs including his idea to separate the back and seat of plywood chairs and giving them a skeleton-like frame of tubular steel. His diamond furniture series created in 1952 included a variety of chairs and armchairs made of wire mesh that exemplified his legacy of creations with wire mesh.
