Marcel Wanders was born in Boxtel, The Netherlands in 1953. He is one of the best known furniture and product designers in the region. He believes in having a respect for tradition in his designs, dislikes pure functionality and creating for the mass market.
Marcel Wanders likes to mix tradition with the unconventional such as in his V.I.P. Chair, which conveys lightness despite its bulky legs and his Big Shadow lamp series, which resemble traditional table lamps in form, but their size is that of a standard lamp. He also likes to experiment with ancient techniques such as in is Foam bowl in which a natural sponge was immersed in a liquid porcelain mixture and dissolves during the firing process, leaving behind its imprint. He won international acclaim with his designs for Droog Design and later founded his own company Wanders Wonders in 1995.
He sold the company in 2001 and it is now known as Moooi, but he remains the art director there. He then established the Marcel Wanders Studio where he continues to work today.
