Radical Design: ¨Political Anti-Design¨

Archizoom, Superstudio, Global Tools, 9999 and other groups formed the Radial Design movement of 1960s Italy. Radical Design contested the notion of Good Design and its emphasis on pure form, a restrained palate and the use of strictly ¨appropriate¨ materials.

Much like the Italian Futurists 60 years prior Radical Design strongly influenced avant-garde thought largely through their manifestos, reviews and articles. Radical Design was ideologically similar to Anti-Design though the former was generally more interested in the intersection of art and politics. Radical designers were concerned by issues of the environment, the limitations of capitalism, the role of the consumer, urban architecture and alternative lifestyles like those of the Beats and the hippies.
