Utility Design: ¨Parameters for the Public¨

In the early years of the Second World War, the British  Board of Trade established the Utility Design program (1942-1952) limiting the waste of materials and enforcing other parameters on the production of furniture and other effects.

Such restrictions functioned as an opportunity for Arts and Crafts designers and others to further their simple, unadorned aesthetic, leading to Utility Design-like ceramics, clothing and textiles.
