The Centre Pompidou was born in Paris on February, 1977, through the will of the former French President, Georges Pompidou, who wanted to see a public center built in Paris to focus on all forms of modern and contemporary creation: sculpture, painting, books, cinema, video, performances, music, etc. Twenty years, and some 160 million visitors later, the Centre has undergone a two-year renovation to provide the public with a reorganized and fully modernized building on January 1, 2000.

The Centre's activities include: - presentation of the permanent collections of the Musée national d’art moderne - Centre de création industrielle (Mnam-Cci), - exhibits, - public reading space, provided by the Bibliothèque publique d’information (Bpi), - performances (theater, dance, music), - cinema, symposia and debates, and publications.
