The Kunstmuseum continues to play a significant role in the arts from Germany. The current Museum building was designed by Axel Schultes and completed in 1992. The museum holds the most important selection of German art since 1945, including works by artists like: August Macke and the Rhenish Expressionists, Max Ernst, and Joseph Beuys.
