The National Museum of Modern Art was inaugurated in 1952, as the first national art museum of Japan. The Museum consists of three different facilities: Art Museum, which emphasizes the promotion and conservation of Japanese modern & contemporary art and has a collection of over 8,000 artworks; Crafts Gallery, which focuses on Japanese and foreign craft works dating from the Meiji era to the present, including textiles, ceramics, glass works, lacquer ware, wood and bamboo works, metal works and jewellery, and dolls; and the National Film Center, which focuses on the preservation and study of films, is a full member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).

The Art Museum´s collection of artworks includes acclaimed Japanese artists, such as, Ryusei KISHIDA, Tsune NAKAMURA, Kagaku MURAKAMI, Morie OGIWARA, Kanae YAMAMOTO, and Shunso HISHIDA
