Mapplethorpe, Robert

Mapplethorpe, Robert

1946-1989

American photographer, and one of the most well known artists of our time.

Trained at the Pratt Institute of Art, his first works consisted of spray-painted collages made of photos cut from magazines. In 1976, Mapplethorpe began using a large-format press camera an continued experimenting with a variety of printing techniques, lighting and color for most of his career. His subject matter generally included: flowers, celebrities, nudes and homoerotic themes, for which he is most well known. As an artist, he explored new printing techniques and was known for his experiments with lighting and color.

Mapplethorpe´s one-man exhibitions have been held at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C. (1978), the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris (1983), and the Whitney Museum in New York (1988). Mapplethorpe died from AIDS in 1986.
