William Nelson Copley Biography

New York, 1919 ? 1996

American SURREALIST painter and printmaker William Nelson Copley captured his inventive imagination on canvas and paper, revealing a love for intricate and complicated design. It is not unusual for him to blend stripes, polka dots, plaids and checkers into a single, striking image. Born in New York in 1919 and educated at Yale University, Copley only began to paint for himself in 1947, when he opened his own gallery in California.
