Photo-Realism

Photo-Realism

Also referred to as HYPERREALISM, SHARP-FOCUS REALISM and REALISM. Often linked to POP ART, Photo-Realism generally refers to REALIST paintings, where the subject is the photograph, or the photographic version of reality.

Some 20th century critics have viewed Photo-Realism as an uninteresting art movement due to the modus operandi whereby the artist paints from photographic images projected onto the canvas, using thinly applied acrylic paint.

This primarily-American movement began in 1960´s and its most famous practioners include: Robert BECHTLE, John CLEM CLARKE, Chuck CLOSE, Robert COTTINGHAM, Rackstraw DOWNES, Don EDDY, Richard ESTES, Audrey FLACK, Ralph GOINGS, Richard MCLEAN, and Malcolm MORLEY.
