Detailed Description

In 1937 Picasso painted GUERNI CA which subsequently became the most celebrated anti-war image of the twentieth century. This painting was his response to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica by the Nazis for Franco. The huge painting measured 3.5 metres by 7.77 metres and travelled the world before returning to Spain. In June 2008 Dominic Ryan, after spending ten years in conflict zones, decided to recreate another image to reflect the horrors of the twenty first century and act as a message to what we cannot allow to occur again. The artist, who had founded a small NGO called the Peace Project in 1994 where art installations with humanitarian messages were erected has been moved to create another statement about injustice, suffering and war. Between June and October 2008 he worked with three assistants to paint this image before you. This was a direct response to Dominic’s recent experiences in the Middle East and his desire to bring a large installation to the nuclear reactor plant in Iran. Hence the name,Tehran, US A. This became abbreviated to TUS A. Both the painting’s theme and size are the same as Picasso’s GUERNICA.
