Sir William Dobell
(Cooks Hill, 1899- Wangi Wangi, 1970)

Australian painter, considered to be one of the most famous artists to emerge from Australia during the 20th century.

Educated at the Slade School in London, his European education and travels contributed to his style of painting and he is one of the artists credited with the introduction of contemporary art styles to Australia. He gained significant fame as an Expressionist and as a leading portraist in Australia.
