Juan Gris
(Madrid, 1887- Paris, 1927)

Spanish painter, sculptor and printmaker, recognized as a masker and key figure in Cubism.

He initiated his career as a cartoonist for various newspapers and magazines and only took up painting after meeting Picasso, in Paris. His works often utilize papier collé and he held his first solo-exhibition at the Léonce Rosenberg´s Galerie lÉffort Moderne, Paris, in 1920. Amongst his works are Violin and Fruit Dish ( Tate Gallery, London).
